In a momentous achievement for Arunachal Pradesh, the traditional highland cheese Yak Churpi has been awarded Geographical Indication (GI) registration. Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein announced the milestone on Monday, highlighting its significance for mountain communities deeply connected with yak culture and the Himalayan ecosystem.
Yak Churpi, known for its dense texture and nutritional value, has long been a staple for inhabitants of Tawang and West Kameng's harsh terrains. With its GI status, this cultural gem now gains a boost in visibility and market potential, ensuring the authenticity of this traditional cheese while protecting indigenous methods.
The GI recognition promises economic benefits by shielding local producers from imitation and opening premium niche markets. It preserves Arunachal Pradesh's rich heritage, encouraging sustainable development and promoting indigenous foods on national and international stages.
