On Tuesday, Glasgow-born artist Nnena Kalu was awarded the 2025 Turner Prize for her innovative contributions to contemporary art. The jury applauded her distinctive hanging sculptures made from various materials and her large-scale drawings, likening the forms to cocoons.
The Turner Prize, established in 1984 and named after British painter J.M.W. Turner, recognizes exceptional exhibitions or presentations by artists born or based in the United Kingdom. Kalu, aged 59, received a prize of £25,000 (approximately $33,240), with the jury noting her 'bold and compelling work' and mastery of scale, composition, and color.
This year's prize announcement was held in Bradford, the 2025 UK City of Culture, where magician Steven Frayne, also known as Dynamo, presented the award. Last year's recipient was fellow Glaswegian artist Jasleen Kaur, continuing the city's strong representation in the arts. ($1=£0.7521)
