In defiance of a Supreme Court ban, traditional buffalo fights marked the Magh Bihu celebrations in Assam's Morigaon district. Locally known as 'Moh juj', the events were held in Baidyabori and Ahatguri, attracting significant local participation.

Despite official silence due to the matter being sub-judice, the spirited contests saw over 40 pairs of buffaloes engage in bouts at Baidyabori, some lasting beyond 20 minutes. Ahatguri's event featured 33 pairs, gathering large audiences to partake in the age-old spectacle.

The Assam government's recent legislative attempt, the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Assam Amendment) Bill, 2025, seeks to legitimize buffalo fights by excluding them from animal cruelty laws, similar to Tamil Nadu's Jallikattu exemption. The bill passed in November, underscoring cultural preservation against legal challenges.
