Regulating Houseboats on Vembanad Lake: A New Mandate

In a significant move aimed at preserving the ecological balance of Vembanad Lake, the Port Officer and Registering Authority announced Friday that only houseboats equipped with pollution control systems and valid certification will be allowed to operate post-April 19.

This decision, stemming from a Kerala High Court interim order dated January 20, 2026, mandates environmentally compliant operations within three months from the order. These houseboats are pivotal in attracting global tourists to Alappuzha, making adherence crucial to sustaining tourism while prioritizing environmental commitments.

As the deadline approaches, houseboat operators must quickly align with the new regulations or risk being banned from offering services in the scenic Vembanad Lake, adhering to this environmentally focused directive.
