Reviving the Yamuna: Delhi's Plan for Spiritual Tourism and Sustainable Development

Delhi L-G Taranjit Singh Sandhu has tasked the DDA with incorporating elements of spiritual tourism into the redevelopment of the Yamuna ghats. The initiative aims to expand green spaces, create sustainable livelihoods, and ensure flood resilience, enhancing the Yamuna floodplain as a significant eco-friendly area in the city.

Delhi's Lieutenant Governor, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, has instructed the Delhi Development Authority to incorporate elements of spiritual tourism into the redevelopment plans for the Yamuna's ghats. This development aims to enrich the historical and cultural significance of the riverbanks by fostering eco-friendly environments and sustainable livelihood options for local residents.

Throughout a recent meeting, Sandhu emphasized refining the plans to include robust green spaces and flood mitigation measures, ensuring long-term resilience in flood-prone areas. The initiatives are set to transform approximately 55 kilometers of riverfront, stretching from Palla to Kalindi Kunj, into vibrant, eco-friendly spaces.

Past visits by Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta have laid the groundwork for revitalization efforts. Existing sites like Vasudev Ghat have already demonstrated positive outcomes. Presently, the DDA is managing multiple projects over 1,660 hectares, with plans to expand efforts in the future.
