The Indian Red Cross Society Nagaland state branch (IRCSN) on Friday observed World Red Cross Day with a 'Walk for Humanity' here, reaffirming the spirit of compassion, unity and service to humanity. The participants, including children, youths and elders, walked from Red Cross Complex to Old NST here, covering a little over 2 km, highlighting this year's global theme, 'United in Humanity,' to promote humanitarian values and social responsibility. Speaking at the event, MLA Tseilhoutuo Rhutso called upon people, especially the youths, to carry forward the spirit of humanity in their daily lives. Recalling the legacy of Red Cross founder Henry Dunant, Rhutso narrated how Dunant mobilised villagers to help over 40,000 wounded soldiers during the Battle of Solferino in Italy despite not being a medical professional himself. ''When it comes to humanity, religion does not come into the picture. There is no age bar, no race bar. Humanity begins in the heart,'' he said. He stressed that humanitarian service is not limited to large acts alone but can begin with simple gestures in everyday life, such as honesty in one's profession or helping classmates and neighbours in need. IRCSN general secretary Akhale Khamo read out the message of the secretary general of the Indian Red Cross Society, who emphasised that compassion, solidarity and service transcend all boundaries. The message lauded the efforts of volunteers, youth, staff and supporters for their dedication in responding to disasters, supporting health initiatives, organising blood donation drives, strengthening first-aid services and reaching out to people during crises.
