West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday visited Belur Math, his first visit to the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission after assuming office.

He arrived at Belur Math in the morning and met the president maharaj of the order during his visit, officials said.

Senior monks of the monastery welcomed the chief minister upon his arrival at the sprawling campus on the banks of the Hooghly river.

''It was a spiritual visit. The chief minister sought blessings from the revered monks and spent some time at the Math,'' a senior official said.

Belur Math, founded by Swami Vivekananda, is regarded as one of the most important spiritual and cultural landmarks in the state and attracts devotees from across the country.
