According to the Pakistan Economic Survey 2023-24, the country's donkey population has increased by 1.72 percent, reaching 5.9 million. The survey, launched by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, underscores the integral role of donkeys in Pakistan's rural economy, especially where 8 million families depend on livestock.
Data indicates a consistent rise in donkey numbers, which were 5.5 million in 2019-2020, gradually reaching 5.9 million in 2023-24. However, horses and mules have not seen any change, remaining at 0.4 million and 0.2 million for the past five years.
Livestock, accounting for 60.84 percent of the agricultural sector and contributing 14.63 percent to GDP, is a crucial component of Pakistan's economy. The sector grew by 3.89 percent in 2023-24, providing significant value to the country's gross economic output.
