Delhi LG Demands Swift Action on Munak Canal Breach

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has urged immediate action to address a severe breach in the Munak Canal. He has directed various departments and officials to collaborate with Haryana authorities for swift restoration and to take preventive measures to avoid future breaches and water losses.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has expressed grave concerns over a major breach in the Munak Canal's CLC branch, instructing the Chief Secretary to liaise with the Water Minister and Flood Control Department Minister of the GNCTD. He emphasized that communication should be established with Haryana authorities to expedite the canal's restoration, repair, and maintenance. Saxena also highlighted the need to line the un-lined segment of the canal to prevent further breaches and water wastage.

In a detailed letter, the LG issued multiple directives. He instructed the CEO of the Delhi Jal Board to visit the site with his engineering team and coordinate restoration efforts with Haryana officials. Additionally, NDRF teams were ordered to evacuate affected residents. The Irrigation and Flood Control Department was tasked with draining the water using pumps and providing boats for NDRF operations. The DUSIB was directed to handle relief and rehabilitation efforts, ensuring the availability of essential services such as shelters. Saxena also stressed the involvement of the Disaster Management Cell and local executive magistrates to manage rescue and relief operations effectively, along with public announcements to inform residents.

Addressing a recent breach in the Bawana area, Saxena underscored the lack of adequate maintenance by the Delhi Jal Board in coordination with the Haryana Irrigation Department. The breach caused flooding in adjacent areas. Delhi Water Minister Atishi confirmed that repair work had begun and was expected to be completed by the afternoon. Delhi Flood Control Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj also visited the site and engaged officials to assist in the restoration efforts. Local residents reported significant water damage, criticizing the administration's response.
