IMD Issues Orange Alert for Mumbai: Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall Expected

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall on Friday and Saturday. Various areas in Mumbai have experienced significant rainfall, with waterlogging reported. Despite the rains, rail traffic remains unaffected, though some bus routes have been altered.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall on Friday and Saturday. A monsoon trough and a developing cyclonic circulation over Mumbai have resulted in strong westerly winds, according to the Met Department.

An orange alert signals extremely bad weather conditions, affecting transport facilities including rail, road, and air travel. Recent data released by the IMD records average rainfall at 93.16 mm in Central Mumbai, 66.03 mm in the Eastern Suburbs, and 78.93 mm in the Western Suburbs as of 8 am.

Heavy rains in the city have led to waterlogging in areas like King’s Circle and Navi Mumbai. In the central region, the highest rainfall from 7 am to 8 am was at F/N Ward Office and Wadala Fire Station at 28 mm. Schools and fire stations across various suburbs have also recorded substantial rainfall amounts.

Despite the downpour, railway traffic remains unaffected. However, routes for the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) buses have been altered in Sion. The Palghar region has also been heavily affected, with IMD issuing an orange alert in the area.

The IMD expects heavy rainfall at isolated places in Mumbai over the next few hours and has issued a yellow alert for Thane and Raigad regions. Earlier, Mumbai faced significant waterlogging and traffic disruptions due to heavy rainfall, with alerts for continued adverse weather conditions up to July 12.
