In a significant move, the Central government has announced June 25 as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' (Constitution Murder Day) to honor those who suffered and fought against the abuse of power during the 1975 Emergency. The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) released a notification stating that this day serves as a tribute to the resilience and sacrifices of the Indian people.

The notification emphasizes that the people of India hold an abiding faith in the Constitution and the power of India's democracy. It declares, “Government of India announces June 25 as 'Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas' to remember those who faced brutality during the Emergency and to recommit to preventing such abuses in the future.”

Following the announcement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah remarked on social media that the Emergency, imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, severely undermined democracy by imprisoning lakhs and silencing the media. Shah emphasized that this day will honor the contributions of those who endured the Emergency's harsh repercussions, ensuring that future generations understand the significance of upholding democratic principles.
