Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday accused the Center of neglecting Kerala in the Union Budget 2024-25, presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. Vijayan asserted that the budget exhibited a discriminatory attitude towards states, particularly Kerala, despite outlining eight goals of national importance.
While acknowledging the budget's packages for other states, Vijayan emphasized that the total neglect of any state is unacceptable. He stated that the Center's attitude is detrimental to Kerala's progress, citing the refusal to address the state's longstanding demands. Vijayan vowed to reiterate Kerala's demands to the Centre once the budget proposals are thoroughly reviewed.
Vijayan pointed out the omission of Kerala's demand for an AIIMS institute, as well as concerns related to disaster relief and the tourism sector. He criticized the Centre's handling of agricultural issues and borrowing limits, stressing the need for fiscal empowerment of states to ensure effective development. The CM also addressed the Centre's encroachment on states' tax powers and significant budget cuts in central projects crucial for the common people.
The Kerala CM condemned the budget for ignoring the needs of the majority of states in favor of the central government's political survival. He called for a consensus beyond party lines to oppose the central government's neglect. Meanwhile, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, presenting her seventh consecutive Union Budget, highlighted priorities like productivity in agriculture, employment, skilling, and services.
