Mumbai Paralyzed by Heavy Rainfall: Subway Closed, Commuters Face Inconvenience

Heavy rainfall in Mumbai led to the closure of Andheri Subway due to waterlogging. Public transport has been disrupted, and a red alert issued. The BMC warns of moderate to heavy rain with gusty winds, with Vihar Lake overflowing. Several districts face heavy rainfall warnings.

The Andheri Subway in Mumbai has been closed for vehicular movement following waterlogging from persistent rainfall. The downpours have brought back woes for Mumbai and the suburbs, with waterlogging reported from several low-lying areas.

Overnight heavy rainfall has disrupted public transport services, causing inconvenience to countless commuters. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the weather forecast at 8 AM suggests moderate to heavy rain in the city and suburbs.

The forecast indicates the possibility of very heavy rainfall in isolated places, along with occasional gusty winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph. Vihar Lake, one of seven lakes supplying water to the Mumbai metropolitan area, started overflowing at around 3:50 AM. The lake has a full storage capacity of 2,769.8 crore litres (27,698 million litres).

BMC shared a video of the overflowing Vihar Lake on its official social media handle. Heavy rains continue to lash parts of Mumbai, with visuals from Vile Parle and the Western Express Highway showing commuters braving the downpour.

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Maharashtra, predicting extremely heavy rainfall. An orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall has also been issued for Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts in the Konkan region.

BMC has indicated that moderate to heavy rain is expected in the city and suburbs on Thursday and Friday, with the possibility of very heavy rainfall in isolated places and gusty winds. A high tide is expected at 2:51 PM on Thursday. Some areas are likely to experience moderate to heavy rains.

On Wednesday, Mumbai's local train services were temporarily affected when a bamboo structure fell on the overhead cable system between Matunga and Sion stations, impacting several train operations and causing inconvenience to daily commuters.
