Telangana Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, with his family, offered prayers at the Bhagyalakshmi Temple on Sunday to mark the Bonalu festival. He presented silk clothes to the goddess, a customary offering during the celebrations.

Bonalu is a traditional Hindu festival honoring Goddess Mahakali, particularly popular in Telangana. Celebrated in July and August, it draws attendees from Hyderabad and Secunderabad, transforming the twin cities into vibrant hubs of devotion.

Special poojas, or religious ceremonies, are conducted for Goddess Yellamma, a regional manifestation of Goddess Mahakali. Devotees see Bonalu as a thanksgiving event to Goddess Kali for answering prayers and fulfilling wishes. 'Bonam,' from the Sanskrit 'Bhojanam,' translates to feast in Telugu, underscoring the festival's focus on offering food.

In light of the Mahankali Bonalu Festival, Hyderabad enforced a ban on liquor sales in all shops, clubs, star hotels, and restaurants. Women prepare rice with jaggery in new earthen pots, decorated with turmeric, vermillion, and neem leaves, as part of the festivities.

During the festival, women light a lamp on top of the pot, carry it on their heads to offer to Goddess Yellamma, accompanied by other traditional offerings such as bangles and a sari. (ANI)
