Rand Water will conclude the final phase of its month-long proactive maintenance project this evening. The maintenance, which began last month, includes critical work at the Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant (ZWTP) Engine Room 2, set to wrap up on Tuesday, July 30, 2024, around 9 pm.
The maintenance involves servicing various valves, pipelines, and electrical and mechanical assets. This work will affect water supply at the Palmiet Pumping Station, reducing its pumping capacity to 76% during the maintenance period, resulting in a 24% reduction in production capacity.
As a result, residents in Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, and the Madibeng Local Municipality in the North West's Bojanala Platinum District will experience disruptions. Rand Water noted that recovery times will vary depending on the hydraulic design of the water systems, meaning some areas may see restoration sooner than others.
The water utility is collaborating with municipalities to keep affected customers informed about the water supply impacts and alternative measures being implemented to provide residents with access to water.
Rand Water emphasized the importance of this maintenance in enhancing the reliability and integrity of water infrastructure, ensuring a sustainable and uninterrupted supply of bulk potable water in the long term.
