MCD Commissioner Engages with UPSC Aspirants Amid Protests in Delhi

MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar met with a delegation of UPSC aspirants following the deaths of three students at a coaching center. Addressing various issues, Kumar assured students of proper redressal and highlighted the need for infrastructural improvements and legal frameworks to support students' needs.

Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner Ashwani Kumar engaged with a delegation of UPSC aspirants at the MCD headquarters on Wednesday. This meeting came in response to protests triggered by the deaths of three students at a coaching center in Old Rajinder Nagar, Delhi. The Commissioner met with 28 students who presented their suggestions during the elaborate discussion.

According to a press release, the students urged for a legal framework to address distortions in rent, security deposits, and brokerage charges levied by property owners in the area. Kumar agreed that such a framework is necessary. He also emphasized the urgency to decongest residential areas that have turned into ghettos, suggesting the expansion of coaching centers into more developed areas.

Among the major demands was financial assistance for the families affected by the tragedy; ex gratia as per government norms has already been released, and further assistance was noted. Concerns about unhygienic kitchens and caterers were also raised, leading to directives for regular inspections by the public health department. Additional issues such as hanging wires, poor drainage systems, unauthorized parking, and stray dog menace were discussed, with Kumar assuring coordinated efforts to address them.
