South Africa should consider India's approach to tackling its energy crisis, particularly in the realm of nuclear energy and the involvement of the private sector, a senior policy researcher has advised.
Speaking in a daily Business Report, Redge Nkosi, executive director and head of research at the Centre for Alternative Political and Economic Thought, called attention to India's ambitious plans to build over 18 nuclear reactors with a 13.8 GW capacity by 2032. Nkosi noted this initiative, backed by state and domestic commercial banks, could serve as a model for South Africa.
Nkosi emphasized that India's use of macro-economic tools to manage energy costs has critical lessons. With South Africa currently grappling with surging electricity prices, the researcher highlighted the need for urgent reflection on strategies adopted by BRICS counterparts like India.
