European Shares Rebound Amidst Corporate Earnings Surge
European shares rebounded after six-month lows, mirroring recovery in Asian markets. The STOXX 600 rose by 0.8% with sectors like travel leading gains. Key performers included InterContinental Hotels Group and Monte dei Paschi di Siena. Other notable rises were seen in Adecco, Zalando, and Abrdn.
European shares made a notable rebound on Tuesday, recovering from six-month lows recorded in the previous session. This upturn was in sync with a broader recovery across Asian markets and was partly driven by a robust series of corporate earnings.
As of 0717 GMT, the STOXX 600 index rose by 0.8%, reversing a steep three-day decline experienced since June 2022 and closing below the critical 500-point threshold for the second day. Japan's Nikkei saw a significant 9% gain following its sharpest single-day decline since 1987 in the previous session.
The travel sub-index emerged as the leading sector, buoyed by a 2.1% uptick in InterContinental Hotels Group stocks after the Holiday Inn owner announced strong second-quarter results. Italian banking giant Monte dei Paschi di Siena surged 8.2% as it revised its profit outlook upward.
Swiss staffing company Adecco posted a near 5% gain despite signaling ongoing weak hiring trends for the third quarter. Online fashion retailer Zalando saw a 4% increase in share value following an 18.5% boost in second-quarter operating profits. British asset manager Abrdn experienced a 3.7% rise even though it reported a slight decline in assets under management as of June 30.
