Vice-President and Rajya Sabha Chairman, Jagdeep Dhankhar, paid homage to freedom fighters on the 81st anniversary of the historic 'Quit India Movement' on Friday. The decisive campaign against British rule was launched on this day in 1942, on Mahatma Gandhi's call at the Bombay session of the Congress on August 8, marked by his resounding 'Do or Die' speech.

An alarmed British government had arrested the Congress top leadership, but the populace embraced Gandhi's call. In his statement in the Upper House, Dhankhar called on members to reaffirm their commitment to uphold sovereignty, integrity, and rededicate themselves to the service of Bharat.

Dhankhar termed this an occasion for MPs to introspect and reflect on their moral contributions, urging them to rededicate themselves with greater vigor towards realizing the nation's aspirations and securing a place of pride for Bharat in the global community. Emphasizing the contemporary relevance of the 'Quit India' call during Amrit Kaal, he highlighted the movement as an epitome of collective determination.

Dhankhar underscored Mahatma Gandhi's 'Do or Die' clarion call, noting it had inspired the masses and led to India's independence. He also acknowledged post-independence efforts aimed at poverty alleviation, promoting literacy, eradicating discrimination, and fostering social inclusivity. The nation takes pride, he said, in the incremental progress made as it moves towards its centenary celebrations in 2047.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the freedom fighters who participated in the 'Quit India Movement' under Gandhi's leadership, emphasizing the movement's significant role in India's struggle for independence.

'Homage to all who took part in the Quit India Movement under Bapu's leadership. It was truly a watershed moment in our freedom struggle,' PM Modi stated in a post on X. (ANI)
