In a tense confrontation at the India-Bangladesh border in Malda, West Bengal, a Bangladeshi smuggler was neutralized by the Border Security Force (BSF) in self-defensive fire. The incident ensued when the BSF personnel were attacked by a group of smugglers armed with sharp weapons during the night of August 11-12.

Officials disclosed that the altercation transpired at the Chandnichak Border Outpost, 115th Battalion, under the South Bengal Frontier. The deceased smuggler, identified as Abdullah from Chapainawabganj, Bangladesh, moved in to retrieve bidi leaves consigned to India, defying the security cordon of the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB).

During a patrol shift on August 12, BSF jawans detected and challenged smugglers transferring goods across the border. Despite the warnings, the smugglers escalated the attack, prompting the jawans to open fire in self-defense. The attacks forced the smugglers to retreat, leaving behind sharp weapons and contraband items. Similar deadly encounters have reportedly occurred at multiple border outposts. Meetings with BGB have been held to protest these persistent, unprovoked attacks.
