In a vehement demand for accountability, BJP leader Anil K Antony on Friday called for the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Antony criticized the state's handling of women's safety, stating that West Bengal, despite being led by a female chief minister, sees one of the highest rates of violence against women.

'Both the police department and the health ministry, which are under the Chief Minister, are failing in their duties,' he asserted, accusing the authorities of tampering with evidence to shield the perpetrators. His remarks follow a string of violent incidents, including those in Sandeshkhali and now Kolkata.

The gruesome incident has ignited nationwide protests from doctors and medical professionals. BJP leaders, including MLA Agnimitra Paul and actress-turned-politician Roopa Ganguly, staged demonstrations on Friday, elevating calls for Banerjee's resignation. Ganguly highlighted that this isn't just political maneuvering; it is reflective of widespread public outrage, as evidenced by the massive turnouts in recent protests.

Allegations have surfaced claiming the local police were involved in a systematic cover-up. Videos revealing hired goons at the site of the vandalism at the medical college fuel these accusations. Protesting BJP leaders near Shambazar Metro were detained by police amidst the unrest.

Adding to the turmoil, the Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) enforced a 12-hour general strike in Siliguri, significantly disrupting daily life. The strike was called to condemn the heinous act at RG Kar Medical College, with large sections of the community joining in solidarity.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) have now taken over the case following a directive from the Calcutta High Court. Specialised teams from Delhi have been dispatched to ensure a thorough investigation.
