Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday addressed the issue of inadequate developmental finance, which she cited as a major obstacle for developing economies in reaching Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She noted the urgent necessity to address a $4 trillion annual financing gap.

Speaking at the third Voice of Global South Summit, Sitharaman stated that many SDGs are stagnating in developing nations, with some indicators even regressing. According to a recent World Bank report, one in four developing countries will be poorer by the year's end compared to pre-pandemic levels.

She emphasized that growth remains crucial for development and poverty reduction, advocating for a people-centric growth strategy during India's G20 presidency. Reforms in multilateral development banks, along with fresh capital infusion and private capital mobilization, are essential to meeting these financial challenges, she added.
