Mumbai Doctors Protest Over Trainee Doctor's Tragic Death in Kolkata

Mumbai saw protests by doctors at Azad Maidan demanding safety audits in light of the rape-murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital. The incident has sparked nationwide outrage, with calls for enhanced security in medical institutions.

Doctors and Mumbai residents gathered at Azad Maidan on Monday to protest the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital. The demonstration comes amid rising concerns about workplace safety for healthcare professionals.

Dr Prerna Gomes from Mumbai's Jaslok Hospital voiced her frustration, urging the government to implement mandatory safety audits for all organizations. 'What is the point if we are not safe even after more than 70 years of independence? Doctors always prioritize patients over their own safety. Our workplace needs to be safe,' Dr Gomes stated.

The tragic incident, which occurred on August 9, has led to widespread protests from the medical community. In response, the West Bengal Governor's office has instructed medical colleges statewide to bolster security measures, particularly for female doctors and paramedics. 'Today Raj Bhavan contacted Medical Colleges in the State and alerted them to beef up security,' read a statement from the Raj Bhavan Media Cell.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing the case and recently conducted a 3D laser mapping of the emergency ward at RG Kar Medical College. The Supreme Court has also taken suo motu cognizance, with a bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud set to hear the case on August 20.
