The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has initiated an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of two minor girls in Maharashtra's Badlapur. The commission has requested a comprehensive report from the concerned authorities within two weeks. The report must include details about the delay in FIR registration, its current status, and the health of the victims.
The NHRC highlighted that a media report published on August 18, 2024, indicated that two young students were sexually abused by a school staff member in Thane. Concerns have been raised by the parents regarding the absence of female staff in the girls' washroom and the 12-hour delay in lodging the FIR.
In response, the NHRC has issued notices to Maharashtra's Chief Secretary and Director General of Police. The commission seeks information on counseling provided to the victims and measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents. State leaders, including Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, have announced a fast-track court trial and the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for the case. Protests erupted at Badlapur railway station, and police action has been taken to control the agitated crowd.
