The Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) is set to hold a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Saturday. The protest aims to demand justice for the alleged murder and sexual assault of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
Doctors have been staging demonstrations across various states, calling for justice for the victim whose body was discovered in the seminar hall of the state-run Medical College and Hospital earlier this month. The incident has sparked nationwide outrage and calls for better security laws for healthcare professionals.
The case has been transferred from local police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following an order from the Calcutta High Court. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Dr. Suvrankar Datta, Vice President of FAIMA and a senior resident doctor at AIIMS New Delhi, announced the upcoming protest in a video message. He emphasized the need for a centralized protection act for healthcare professionals to prevent further violence and called for an increase in hospital security nationwide.
Dr. Datta urged doctors to join the protest from 3 pm to 5 pm on August 31, ahead of a Supreme Court hearing scheduled for September 5. Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Kolkata suspended the membership of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former principal of RG Kar Medical College, amid the ongoing CBI probe.
