India Reports New Travel-Related Mpox Case Amid Global Concerns

A man in India has tested positive for Mpox, a virus formerly known as monkeypox, after returning from a country experiencing an outbreak. The Ministry of Health confirmed this as a travel-related case, highlighting it is not part of the current public health emergency involving clade 1 of the virus.

A man who recently traveled from a country experiencing Mpox transmission has tested positive for the virus, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare confirmed on Monday. According to the ministry, this previously suspected case of Mpox has been verified as travel-related. Laboratory tests identified the presence of the Mpox virus, specifically of the West African clade-2.

The ministry emphasized that this case is isolated and not part of the current public health emergency related to clade 1 of Mpox, which has been notified by WHO. The patient, a young male, is isolated at a tertiary care facility and is clinically stable without systemic illness or comorbidities, the statement added.

Officials confirmed that the case is being managed as per established protocols, with public health measures such as contact tracing and monitoring actively in place. There is no sign of widespread public risk at present. Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra has issued an advisory outlining precautionary actions, symptoms, and causes of the WHO-declared Public Health Emergency of International Concern, Mpox.

Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, has long been a public health issue in parts of Africa but garnered global attention in 2022. Since January 1, 2022, Mpox cases have been reported to WHO from 121 member states. The WHO's September 3, 2024, report states that 102,997 laboratory-confirmed cases and 186 probable cases, including 223 deaths, have been documented.

In July 2024 alone, the world saw 1,425 new cases and six deaths, with the majority of cases stemming from the African region (55%), followed by the Americas (24%), Europe (11%), and South-East Asia (1%). (ANI)
