In a recent development, a petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court for the implementation of women's reservation in the forthcoming Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) Elections. The petition seeks a court directive to allocate a percentage of reserved seats for women to bolster gender equality in student governance.

The plea is directed towards the Central Government, the University Grants Commission (UGC), and Delhi University. It calls for reserving 50 percent of seats for female students in both the Delhi University Student Union and college student union elections, following the recent enactment of 33% women's reservation in State Assembly and Parliament elections under the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.

Shabana Hussain, a Delhi University student, has filed the plea through Advocate Ashu Bhiduri. She highlighted that despite over seven decades of independence, women continue to face substantial challenges due to societal discrimination. She emphasized that the Indian Constitution guarantees equality and adequate political representation for women, and stressed the necessity of such measures to ensure real empowerment in a male-dominated society. The plea is scheduled for hearing by the bench of Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela on Wednesday.
