NIMAS Team Scales Uncharted Peak, Honors 6th Dalai Lama

A NIMAS team has conquered a previously unclimbed 20,942 ft peak in Arunachal Pradesh, naming it 'Tsangyang Gyatso Peak' after the 6th Dalai Lama. This achievement highlights the region's mountaineering potential.

In a remarkable achievement, the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS) has successfully climbed an unnamed and unclimbed peak standing at 20,942 feet in the Gorichen range of Arunachal Pradesh Himalayas. The peak, known for its technical difficulties, was scaled despite sheer ice walls, treacherous crevasses, and a lengthy glacier.

According to a statement from Public Relations Officer Defence Guwahati, the team has named the peak ‘Tsangyang Gyatso Peak’ in honor of His Holiness the 6th Dalai Lama, Rigzen Tsangyang Gyatso, aiming to tribute his wisdom and contributions to the Monpa community. The expedition faced numerous challenges but showcased unparalleled determination and teamwork, setting a historic milestone.

NIMAS has informed the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) about the ascent, and they are now completing the formalities to officially recognize the peak on maps. This climb not only celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh but also positions the region as a prime destination for global adventure sports and mountaineering enthusiasts.
