The Odisha government is set to disburse the first instalment of Rs 5,000 to over 40 lakh women under the Subhadra Yojana on October 9, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida announced on Sunday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the Subhadra Yojana on September 17, coinciding with his birthday, during which Rs 5,000 was directly transferred to the bank accounts of about 25.11 lakh beneficiaries.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, alongside other dignitaries, will officiate the release of funds at Baripada in Mayurbhanj district on October 9, aligning with the Durga Puja festival.
Parida revealed that nearly 96 lakh women have registered under the scheme so far, with eligibility extending to those who apply by October 7. Mayurbhanj was chosen for this phase due to its contributions to women empowerment, notably during the Rath Yatra with the chariot of Devi Subhadra being pulled by women devotees.
The Subhadra Yojana, named after the sister of Lord Jagannath, was a key promise in the BJP's election manifesto. It aims to provide Rs 50,000 over five years to eligible women aged 21-60. Each year, Rs 10,000 will be distributed in two instalments of Rs 5,000 on Rakhi Purnima and International Women's Day, targeting over 1 crore women.
