India's Coal Imports Surge Despite Higher Domestic Production
India's coal imports increased by 11.4% to 121.1 million tonnes between April and August of the current fiscal year, despite a rise in domestic coal production. The country imported 108.7 million tonnes during the same period last year. Surplus domestic coal and reduced demand contributed to lowered import volumes recently.

In the April-August period of the current fiscal year, India's coal imports witnessed an 11.4% increase, reaching 121.1 million tonnes, up from 108.7 million tonnes during the same period last year.
Data from B2B e-commerce platform mjunction shows that total coal and coke imports in this period amounted to 121.18 million tonnes. However, coal imports in August specifically saw a smaller rise of 5.4% over the previous year.
Despite the surge in imports, a surplus availability of domestic coal has led to a decline in import volumes. This trend may persist until energy demand spikes during the festive season, according to industry insights.
