Brazilian Soybean Farmers Clash with Danone Over EU Deforestation Rules
Brazilian soybean farmers call for a boycott of Danone after it stopped sourcing soy from Brazil due to EU deforestation rules. Aprosoja, representing farmers, criticizes the move as discriminatory. The EU regulation, affecting commodities like soy, is delayed, causing unrest among Brazilian farmers facing losses.
The controversy between Brazilian soybean farmers and Danone has taken a new turn as producers call for a boycott of the French dairy giant. This comes after Danone ceased sourcing soy from Brazil in compliance with anticipated EU deforestation regulations, opting instead for Asian suppliers.
Aprosoja Brasil, representing Brazil's leading soybean producers, argues that Danone's decision reflects a misunderstanding of Brazil's sustainable farming practices, calling it discriminatory. The group warns that Brazilian farmers may start boycotting Danone and other international brands.
The EU Deforestation Regulation, targeting imports of commodities like soy, initially set for December 30, faces a proposed year-long delay. Amid high rates of deforestation in Brazil, Aprosoja suggests the government seek recourse through the World Trade Organization.
