India Boosts Submarine Prowess with New Defence Contracts

The Indian Ministry of Defence has signed two major contracts totaling over Rs 2,867 crore to enhance the capabilities of its naval submarines. These agreements aim to integrate advanced Air Independent Propulsion and Electronic Heavy Weight Torpedo technologies, marking a significant stride in India's 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative.

In a significant move to bolster its naval capabilities, India's Ministry of Defence has announced the signing of two high-value contracts worth approximately Rs 2,867 crore. These contracts focus on advanced technological integration for the DRDO's Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system and the Electronic Heavy Weight Torpedo (EHWT) on Indian submarines.

The first contract, worth Rs 1,990 crore, was agreed upon with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) based in Mumbai. This deal centers on the construction of the AIP Plug and its integration, which is expected to extend the operational endurance of conventional submarines. This contract represents a major step towards the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative, emphasizing self-reliance in defense technology development.

The second contract, valued at approximately Rs 877 crore, involves collaboration between the Indian Navy, DRDO, and Naval Group, France. This agreement will see the integration of EHWT into the Kalvari-Class submarines, significantly boosting their firepower capabilities. This initiative is expected to generate nearly three lakh man days of employment, highlighting the economic impact of such defense projects.
