The Reserve Bank has introduced an ambitious USD 10 billion dollar-rupee swap auction scheme, which aims to significantly enhance liquidity in the banking sector. This initiative, set for February 28, introduces liquidity via a 3-year tenor swap auction.

The auction involves a simple buy/sell foreign exchange swap process wherein banks will sell US dollars to the Reserve Bank and concurrently agree to repurchase them once the swap period concludes. This method is strategically crafted to inject sustained Rupee liquidity over an extended period.

Notably, the Reserve Bank, in January, had committed to liquidity infusions exceeding Rs 1.5 lakh crore through various mechanisms, including a USD 5 billion forex swap, highlighting a continued focus on maintaining market stability.
