Manipur Peace Initiative: Zomi and Kuki Communities Disarm

In response to an appeal from Manipur's Governor, the Zomi and Kuki communities surrendered 16 weapons in Churachandpur district. Joined efforts by security forces and local leaders to address safety concerns laid groundwork for this de-weaponization step, inspiring other groups toward peace and regional development.

In a significant move toward peace, members of the Zomi and Kuki communities in Manipur's Churachandpur district surrendered 16 rifles and ammunition on Saturday. This action came in response to an appeal made by the Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, urging all communities to return looted police weapons and illegal arms within a week to avoid punitive measures.

Following the appeal, collaborative efforts were initiated by Assam Rifles, Police, CRPF, State Intelligence Agencies, and State Administration to engage with local community leaders. They addressed security concerns, provided assurances, and highlighted the benefits of de-weaponization for the region. This dialogue led Zomi and Kuki leaders to voluntarily surrender a significant cache of arms, marking a vital step in the peace process chaired by the Central Government.

The surrendered weapons—a result of discussions with various authoritative bodies—included M-16 Rifles, AK Rifles, and other arms. This act of relinquishment happened on February 22, 2025, at Tuibong Village, witnessed by prominent officials. The initiative serves as a model to inspire further disarmament efforts, encouraging regional development and stability.
