Germany's Election Shockwave: Markets React to Merz Victory
European markets remain mostly stable amid the expected election victory of Friedrich Merz in Germany. While Germany’s index rises, basic resources decline following lower metal prices. Defence sector gains reflect anticipation of increased spending under Merz, who faces coalition talks critical to Germany's economic revival plans.
European shares saw little movement on Monday as investors absorbed the anticipated victory of Friedrich Merz's conservative opposition in Germany's national election. This political shift drove Germany's benchmark index up by 0.4% while the larger STOXX 600 index fell slightly by 0.1% due to falling metal prices.
The defense sector, comprising stocks such as Hensoldt, Rheinmetall, and Renk, benefited from prospects of increased military spending, reflecting gains between 1% to 2.8%. Meanwhile, the euro gained slightly, trading 0.25% higher amid market adjustments.
Merz’s leadership will usher in significant coalition discussions, potentially causing delays in crucial policy reforms aimed at reversing Germany's economic contractions. In the aerospace and defense sectors, a 1.1% rise highlighted investor confidence. Contrastingly, Siemens Energy and Schneider Electric faced losses amid broader market adjustments.
