European Shares Near Record Highs Amid U.S.-Ukraine Minerals Deal Boost
European stocks inched higher, nearing record peaks, following positive developments in a U.S.-Ukraine minerals agreement. The STOXX 600 and Germany's index saw gains, buoyed by stellar earnings from AB InBev. Meanwhile, Stellantis and Deutsche Telekom faced decreases due to weaker-than-expected financial reports.
European shares surged close to record levels on Wednesday due to positive sentiment sparked by the U.S. and Ukraine's agreement on a key minerals deal. The accord aided market optimism, further bolstered by strong earnings from beer conglomerate AB InBev.
The pan-European STOXX 600 index increased by 0.5% as of 0815 GMT, with Germany's blue-chip index experiencing a 0.8% rise, leading its counterparts. Central to the minerals agreement is Ukraine's aim to bolster U.S. support to swiftly resolve its conflict with Russia, emphasizing the need for a free, sovereign, and secure Ukraine.
Sub-indexes within the STOXX 600 mainly reported gains, highlighted by a 1.5% boost in basic resources. AB InBev's stocks soared by 7.4% post an impressive fourth-quarter performance, elevating the food and beverages index by 1%. Conversely, Stellantis saw a 4% dip following a significant net profit fall, while Deutsche Telekom declined by 3.6% owing to lower-than-anticipated results and future outlook.
