Cyprus and Abu Dhabi: Powering Up the Great Sea Interconnector
Cyprus's Energy Minister announced that Abu Dhabi's TAQA is interested in investing in the Great Sea Interconnector. This 1.9 billion-euro project aims to connect Europe's electricity networks to Cyprus and later Israel. ADNOC has also shown interest in Cyprus's Exclusive Economic Zone and potential licensing rounds.
Cyprus is making strides to bolster its energy infrastructure with the involvement of Abu Dhabi's TAQA. Energy Minister George Papanastasiou revealed that TAQA is keen on investing in the Great Sea Interconnector, an ambitious 1.9 billion-euro project set to link European electricity networks to Cyprus and eventually Israel.
During the Investopia conference in Abu Dhabi, Papanastasiou disclosed to Reuters that the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) is exploring investment opportunities within Cyprus's Exclusive Economic Zone. Specifically, ADNOC is on the lookout for assets that are ready for immediate engagement.
The minister noted the possibility of a new licensing round involving ADNOC for exploration purposes, acknowledging the oil company's previous interest in Cyprus's burgeoning natural gas sector, which was confirmed last November.
