Netherlands Launches Pioneering Poultry Vaccination Pilot to Combat Bird Flu
The Netherlands has initiated a pilot program to vaccinate poultry against bird flu on a laying-hen farm. This move comes after successful vaccine tests and aims to achieve large-scale vaccination. The program will test market responses to products from vaccinated poultry and address infrastructure challenges in vaccination.
The Netherlands, recognized as one of the foremost egg exporters globally, has embarked on an innovative pilot project aimed at vaccinating poultry against the deadly bird flu. The initiative, announced by the government on Monday, seeks to accomplish extensive vaccination across farms.
Following last year’s successful field tests of two vaccines, the pilot will begin on a single farm, with plans for potential expansion. This will also involve monitoring market reactions to products derived from vaccinated birds as well as gathering pertinent data on how such surveillance programs are executed.
Given the extensive adjustments required in veterinary infrastructure, the Netherlands has chosen a phased introduction. While aiming to prevent export bans due to possible health risks, chicks will be vaccinated at hatcheries and their products sold domestically until 2027.
