The Chennai Meteorological Department has announced heavy rainfall across eight districts, issuing an orange alert for Tuesday in Tamil Nadu. The affected districts include Tenkasi, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Nellai, Pudukkottai, Nagai, Ramanathapuram, and Thiruvarur, which are anticipated to receive significant rainfall.
According to the Chennai Met, some areas within these districts could witness rainfall ranging from 12 to 20 centimeters. Special warnings have been issued for Thoothukudi due to potential dangers related to rising water levels. Advisories have been disseminated urging residents, particularly those near the Thamirabarani River and other water bodies, to remain cautious and avoid these areas.
District Collector Ilam Bhagwat has called for vigilant monitoring of water bodies, such as the Marudhur anicut and Koramballam anicut, to ensure immediate actions as necessary. The sudden showers follow a period of intense heat, while a cyclonic circulation over the Equatorial Indian Ocean may bring further rainfall to isolated areas in Tamil Nadu and surrounding regions.
