Cross-Border Tensions Escalate: Jammu & Kashmir on High Alert

In a significant escalation of tensions, the Jammu and Kashmir Police issued warnings on Friday, urging citizens to adhere to blackout protocols and react promptly to sirens amid rising regional unrest. As a precautionary measure, businesses in Jammu City have shuttered operations. Authorities have appealed for public cooperation for ensuring safety. Notably, several residential buildings suffered damage in Kupwara, Poonch, and Rajouri sectors due to cross-border shelling by Pakistan on Thursday.

On Thursday night, Pakistan launched a series of drone and missile strikes targeting multiple locations across Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan. Indian defence officials noted that most of these attacks were thwarted by India's advanced air defence systems, including the S-400. These aggressive maneuvers are believed to be a counter-response to India's recent Operation Sindoor, which targeted terrorist camps in Pakistan following a deadly terrorist attack in Kashmir that claimed the lives of 26 tourists.

The situation remains volatile, with international voices advocating restraint and diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation. During a press briefing, Colonel Sofiya Qureshi disclosed that between 300 to 400 drones were deployed over 36 sites, with many being shot down by Indian forces using various means. Preliminary reports attribute these drones to Turkish manufacturer Asisguard. The Colonel highlighted the Pakistani army's repeated airspace violations across the western border, aiming to test India's defence capabilities and gather intelligence.
