On Monday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge paid tribute to former Congress leader Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das on the centenary of his death. Posting on social media platform X, Kharge praised Das as a pivotal figure in India's Non-Cooperation Movement against colonial rule, noting his dual talents as a lawyer and poet.

Kharge highlighted Das's mentorship of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, emphasizing his commitment to non-violent strategies in the quest for Indian independence. Das was also celebrated for advocating Hindu-Muslim harmony and championing national education and Khadi promotion.

Originating from a well-off family in the Dacca district, Das graduated from Presidency College in Calcutta and was active in social reform, including women's education, and anti-caste discrimination efforts. His profound belief in Swaraj (self-rule) and education fueled his rise as a national political figure, culminating in his election as Mayor of Calcutta in 1924.
