Assam's Power Play: A 3,000-MW Thermal Project

The Assam government plans to establish a 3,000-MW thermal power project on identified lands in Dhubri and Goalpara, potentially creating significant employment opportunities. Initially considered for Kokrajhar, the project was moved amid concerns about tribal land acquisition. The Rs 40,000-crore investment aims to boost regional infrastructure.

The Assam government is advancing plans to set up a massive 3,000-MW thermal power project across identified plots in Dhubri and Goalpara districts, as announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. This initiative, expected to receive its foundation stone by November, is part of a substantial Rs 40,000 crore investment in the state's energy sector.

Initially, the project was considered for Kokrajhar district to stimulate local economic growth and job creation. However, the state government has reconsidered the location following allegations of attempting to seize tribal land to benefit corporate interests. The move to Dhubri and Goalpara reflects a strategic shift in response to public criticism.

Despite the relocation, Sarma emphasized the potential benefits of such investments, comparing it to a Rs 26,000-crore semiconductor unit coming up in Jagiroad. This power project alone is anticipated to generate around one lakh direct and indirect jobs, marking a significant boon for Assam's infrastructural development.
