India Prepares for Vice Presidential Election Amid Sudden Vacancy

The Election Commission of India announced on Friday that the Vice Presidential election will take place on September 9, with the counting scheduled for the same day. Nomination submissions close on August 21, and candidates can withdraw until August 25, as the nation seeks a successor.

The Vice Presidency became vacant when Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned at the onset of the Monsoon Parliament Session on July 21, citing health as his reason. In his resignation letter, Dhankhar stated, "To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the constitution."

In preparation for the election, the Election Commission has finalized the electoral college list, which is available for purchase at their office. The election is determined by a secret ballot among both Houses of Parliament members, utilizing a proportional representation system. Elections are held to fill vacancies as soon as they occur, ensuring uninterrupted governance.
