Delhi's Tis Hazari Court has granted bail to Sonu, the prime accused in the fatal assault case of a 65-year-old man in West Punjabi Bagh, bringing an end to nearly five years of legal proceedings. Sonu had been held since September 26, 2020, facing serious charges including murder and criminal conspiracy under the IPC.
The charges arose from an incident dated September 25-26, 2020, when the victim, Jagdish, was allegedly attacked by Sonu and accomplices after walking a stray dog. During the altercation, Jagdish's wife and children suffered injuries while attempting to defend him. Despite medical intervention at two hospitals, Jagdish succumbed to his injuries the same day.
The court's decision hinged on the lack of a proven motive, ineffective police work, and the dismissal of Sonu's supposed involvement. Key gaps in the police investigation were highlighted, including the failure to record crucial statements from the victim and his wife promptly. Citing these oversights, Judge Nipun Awasthi concluded Sonu's extended detention was unjustified.
