In an urgent response to deteriorating air quality, Delhi has implemented the initial stage of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) as Air Quality Index (AQI) levels in the region slid to 211, officially rated 'poor'. This move, according to Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, seeks to ensure cleaner air over the coming days.
The introduction of GRAP-1 has drawn attention to the restrictions it enacts—27 preventive measures ranging from anti-smog technology to dust management in public works. Minister Kapil Mishra emphasized the need for a balanced approach, highlighting that project costs rise due to numerous regulations, urging that these rules should extend beyond Delhi to other states for equity.
As preparations for Chhath Puja intensify, Mishra criticized previous bans placed on the festival in Delhi, blaming administrative dishonesty. This year, robust arrangements for the Puja are planned across 1,300 ghats on the Yamuna banks, overseen by the Chief Minister, while air quality predictions remain challenging, projecting continued 'poor' conditions.
