Trump Implements Harsh Ukraine-Related Sanctions on Russian Oil Giants
President Trump has imposed Ukraine-related sanctions on Russia, targeting major oil companies Lukoil and Rosneft, in response to the ongoing war. The U.S. Treasury warns of further actions while urging a ceasefire. This marks a shift from previous trade measures and follows similar actions by the UK.
In a significant policy shift, U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed Ukraine-related sanctions against Russia, marking the first such action in his second term. Targeting prominent oil companies Lukoil and Rosneft, Trump's decision underscores growing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin over the ongoing conflict.
The U.S. Treasury Department expressed its readiness to escalate these measures if Russia fails to comply, urging Moscow to immediately agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized the sanctions as vital to cutting off funding to Russia's military efforts, urging allied nations to follow suit.
This move contrasts with Trump's prior reliance on trade measures, including tariffs on Indian goods for purchasing discounted Russian oil. While the President has spared China, a key Russian oil buyer, from similar measures, the Western-imposed $60 oil price cap has redirected Russia’s oil exports towards Asian markets.
