Honoring Chhotu Ram: A Legacy of Agrarian Reform and Freedom Struggles

In a reflective tribute on Monday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge commemorated the 144th birth anniversary of agrarian reformer Deenbandhu Chaudhary Chhotu Ram. Kharge hailed Chhotu Ram's relentless struggle against British colonial powers, celebrating his efforts to secure rights for India's farmers and laborers. Highlighting Chhotu Ram's participation in the freedom movement, Kharge expressed deep respect for his legacy.

Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh also paid homage, emphasizing the enduring impact of Chhotu Ram's contributions. Singh noted that the great freedom fighter and social worker was a fierce proponent of farmers' rights, whose actions have inspired many over the years. The ministers used social platform X to share their tributes in Hindi.

Renowned as 'Deenbandhu' and 'Kisano ka Maseeha', Chhotu Ram was a key political figure in British India's Punjab province. His advocacy extended beyond political affiliations, initially joining the Indian National Congress before co-founding the Unionist Party in 1920 to champion agrarian interests. His ambitions led to significant infrastructure projects like the Bakhra dam, transforming agricultural irrigation and power distribution.
