Kremlin's Stance on Proposed Christmas Truce Amid War Tensions
The Kremlin remarks that a Christmas truce suggested by Ukraine hinges on a peace agreement. Ukraine is open to a ceasefire during the Christmas period, particularly concerning energy infrastructure. However, Russia is hesitant about a short-term truce, emphasizing lasting peace and fulfilling its goals.
The Kremlin announced on Tuesday that a proposed Christmas truce by Ukraine would be contingent upon reaching a peace agreement. The idea of a ceasefire during the Christmas period was supported by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, focusing mainly on halting strikes against energy infrastructure.
Responding to the truce suggestion, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized the need for a long-term resolution rather than temporary ceasefires. He mentioned that Russia prefers a permanent settlement instead of providing Ukraine with time to regroup and prolong the conflict.
Peskov insisted that Russia aims to secure lasting peace, meet its objectives, and ensure future European stability. Moscow has yet to review NATO-style security guarantee proposals for Ukraine reportedly offered by Washington and European allies.
