In a recent communication to the Prime Minister's Office, Tata Motors expressed strong opposition to allowing exemptions for small petrol vehicles from stringent Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) standards. They argue this move could impede the growth of sustainable technologies in India, particularly as electric vehicle (EV) adoption reaches nearly 5% in passenger cars.

Tata Motors cautioned that granting relaxations based on vehicle weight might unintentionally encourage manufacturers to reduce vehicle weight at the expense of crucial safety features. This could potentially reverse the significant advancements made in vehicle safety over past years.

The Indian government has proposed CAFE rules to tighten passenger vehicle fuel consumption and carbon emissions between April 2027 and March 2032. Tata Motors appeals for no special concessions based on vehicle size or weight, as this could undermine the national mission for zero emissions vehicles and sustainable technology integration.
