Tensions flared at Rameshwaram fishing port Thursday as local fishermen captured a mechanised fishing boat from Karaikal, Puducherry, late Thursday night near the Dhanushkodi coast. The fishermen claimed these boats were operating nearshore, instead of in deeper waters, severely impacting the livelihoods of local communities reliant on fishing.
Further aggravating the situation, Karaikal fishermen reportedly used deep-sea fishing nets in Sri Lankan waters, leading to damage to gear belonging to Sri Lankan fishermen. This prompted the Sri Lankan government to mandate the seizure of Indian boats by its navy, with Rameswaram fishermen bearing the brunt of these actions.
Despite ongoing grievances from Tamil Nadu fishermen, Karaikal counterparts allegedly persist in unlawful practices. Frustration culminated in the interception of a Karaikal fishing boat by Rameswaram fishermen. They brought the vessel, along with its crew, to Rameswaram Fisheries Department. The incident underscores an urgent call for resolution, as regional livelihoods remain jeopardized.
